Birthstone jewelry makes a great gift. It takes much of the trouble out of deciding what to give someone and the gifted item will always hold at least a small measure of significance to the lucky person receiving it. The original list of birthstones found below became an internationally accepted standard after having been adopted by the Jewelers of America in 1912.

MonthBirthstoneAlternate Birthstone(s)
January Garnet Rose Quartz
MarchAquamarineRed Jasper (aka Bloodstone)
AprilDiamondRock Crystal (aka Quartz)
JunePearlAlexandrite or Moonstone
JulyRubyJade or Carnelian
AugustPeridotSapphire, Aventurine, or Sardonyx
SeptemberSapphireLapis lazuli
OctoberOpalPink Tourmaline
NovemberYellow TopazCitrine or Turquoise
DecemberBlue ZirconTurquoise, Lapis Lazuli, Blue Topaz* or Tanzanite**

Many additional alternative stones have since been added, but these remain the primary gemstones of choice. As you can see, most of the traditional ‘upper echelon’ stones were used, such as diamond, emerald, sapphire, and ruby. These have always been considered the most desirable of all gemstones and although they need little help, this standardized list helps keep them there.

In addition to being the birthstone for the month of May, the emerald is also used for the 20th, 35th, and 55th anniversaries.

* Generally accepted
** Tanzanite added to list in 2002
