The Gemological Institute of America defines a blemish as "characteristics confined to or primarily affecting the surface." Blemishes can arise from a varity of sources, none of them are favorable. Mishandling or poorly caring for a gemstone can result in a variety of surface blemishes, including scratches, pits, nicks, chips, and abrasions.

While blemishes are used in conjunction with Inclusion to evaluate a stones clarity, they differ in that blemishes are surface charactistics, where Inclusion exist from within the stone.

Depending on the type and severity of the blemish in question, it may or may not affect the clarity. Scratches on the table can usually be polished away. on the otherhand, a chip along the girdle can severly affect a gemstones value.
