North Carolina's emerald industry began in 1875 on the Rist and Ellis Property, to the northeast of Hiddenite, in Alexander County. Crystals up to 11 centimeters in length are not uncommon. The Carolina Emerald and the Carolina Queen are two of the more famous specimens found at this location.
