Poona District

The Poona district is a district in western Australia located about 300 miles to the north east of Perth. Emeralds were first discovered in this location in 1912 by A.P. Ryan.

There are a variety of both open cut and underground mines within and near by this region, including:

  • Aga Khan Deep
  • Quartz Blow
  • Mid Section
  • Soloman
  • Reward
  • Lee's Trench
  • Emerald Pool
  • Poona Emerald

Most of the emeralds retrieved here are generally considered of poor quality, though have yielded over 50 thousand carats of material. Further complicating mining operations are encasement in a variety of matrix materials, including beryl, quartz, albite, oligoclase, topaz, tourmaline, fluorite, biotite, phlogopite, lepidolite, zinnwaldite, margarite, talc, tremolite, muscovite, scheelite, chromite, apatite, manganotantalite, and monazite.
