Beryls are minerals that can be classified as beryllium aluminium cyclosilicates. There are several types of beryls that form under differing mineralogical and geological conditions. All of them have the same chemical composition: Be3Al2(SiO3)6, have the same Mohs Scale of Hardness rating of 7.5-8.0, and typically form in hexagonal (6 sided) crystals .

The different types of beryl are distinguishable by color which is a result of tinting by trace elements present when beryl crystals form. The colors may be: green (emeralds?), blue (aquamarine), dark blue (maxixe), clear bright yellow (golden beryl), yellow-green (heliodor), red (bixbite or red emerald), pink (morganite) and white. Pure beryl is colorless and may also be known as (goshenite).
