An emerald deposit can be generally defined as a group of occurrences of emerald crystal in one general area and in a large enough quantity that can be worked commercially. Deposits of materials can be divided into three forms.

Primary deposits are minerals found in their natural location, and generally produce low yields compared to the amount of material that must be excavated. Secondary deposits refer to gemstones that have been transported by means such as wind erosion (Aeolian Deposits), or running water from streams or rivers (Fluvial Deposits).
